Diastema: What Are We Talking About?
A diastema is an abnormally wide space between teeth, especially when compared to the rest of the dentition. This is what distinguishes it from other problems with alignment and spacing between teeth. It is noticeable because the other gaps are narrow, relatively regular, and inconspicuous, and the teeth are correctly positioned on the dental arch. This type of defect can sometimes cause discomfort, especially if it is severe and located at the front of the teeth, for example between the two upper incisors—what we call the “palettes.” It should be noted that in some cases, it can also cause difficulty in pronouncing certain sounds. However, it is usually corrected for aesthetic reasons first and foremost. Several techniques can be used for this purpose.
Traditional Solutions
Orthodontic Treatment
In cases where more severe alignment problems are observed—in addition to diastemas—orthodontic treatment may be necessary to correct the problem.
Dental Veneers
These thin shells made of porcelain (or composite) improve the shape and appearance of teeth and even out their overall alignment by filling in the spaces between them. Porcelain veneers are durable and look great, but they require two appointments and the removal of a layer of enamel.
Dental crowns
These are mainly used as a last resort when other solutions have not been possible or have produced disappointing results.
Bioclear: New Solution for Closing a Diastema
The Bioclear method is ideal for closing a diastema: it allows targeted corrections to be made in a minimally invasive way and in just one appointment! This innovative technique uses a highly resistant composite resin to adjust the shape of the teeth and fill in irregular spaces. The resin is applied in a matrix (mold) that has been chosen to match the natural shape of the teeth and the defect being treated. The liquid resin is poured into the matrix before being hardened with a special light and polished for a better finish!
